Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The speculation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
